Hello again from the nation's capital !
Carter is attending lacrosse camp at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY. We dropped him off earlier this morning. He was pretty excited with neary a wave goodbye. He is with his buddies whom he will play and party with the next four nights. We settled him in his dorm room then scuttled him to the lacrosse field. He got dressed and joined the rest of the players on the field. They were playing in the rain when we left. Our home will be quiet this week; a chance to catch up on some chores. We stopped for lunch at the Canton Chinese Buffet for lunch before making the trek home.
We left for Canton, ie our camp site on Friday afternoon. It showered and shone all the way to the border. When we crossed the St Lawrence River the sun was shining and all was great. Paula and Carter bought groceries at Walmart and Randy played with Bob. It was sunny and warm. Once we got back on the road with the RV it got cloudy and started to rain. We made it to the camp site without a hitch. The country side is almost hillbilly back country. The homes are all right on the road. Most all the homes are very old cottage style and many of them are owned by the Amish. They were out and about everywhere selling their strawberries. We wish we had stopped to buy some. It was kind of neat passing them on the highway. They travel along with a buggy and a skinny little pony. Their presence definitely makes them a tourist destination.
The campsite we had chosen was way to steep for our RV so we had to shop around the park looking for a suitable open site. We found a nice flat spot, backed in and set up camp. It was still raining but we set up camp anyway. After a couple of cocktails and Carter a few episodes of 'The Lone Ranger' we BBQ'd some hamburgers. We also BBQ'd fresh pineapple rings for toppings. It tasted pretty good. We did this all outside under our canopy in the rain. Neat eh. There was no way we were going to have a fire. Needless to say we were all in bed, and fast a sleep, by 930pm. The park borders the Adirondaks and it was quite a climb. We could feel the air getting cooler the closer we got to the park. The clean fresh air helped knock us out; each of us had a pretty busy week. Despite the peltering rain we all enjoyed a good nights sleep.
The rain stopped some time in the morning. A few minutes after it ceased Randy and Bob were out the door in a flash, some where around 8:30am. The park was not even close to being full despite being fully booked. Bob enjoyed a nice leash free walk and a small dip in the river. The water was 70F; very warm. We returned to the RV to find Carter outside wrapped in his quilt reading his book. He was not quite ambitious enough to put on his clothes but had enough energy to go outside. With no neighbors he had no inhibitions. We chopped some wood then enjoyed the warmth of a fire. Carter brought out the fixins for smores so we let him feast on marshmellow treats. Once Paula could smell fresh tea she soon crept outside. The fire burned all day and until we went to bed. The wood was $3.50 for a huge bundle - dirt cheap. After a couple cups of tea we went for a nice walk. We surveyed the camp in search of potential sites for future reference. Carter and Paula also toured the beach - no dogs allowed so Randy and Bob went to the boat launch. Carter and Paula returned later to the beach for a swim. The sky turned black so their stay was short and sweet. Carter loved the warmth of the water. The river is very high and two life guards are always on duty. The weather was teatering on rain most of the day with five or six moments of sunshine. The humidity was cool and sometimes there was mist in the air. It was a weird day. You didn't want to venture to far fearing it could pour at any given moment.
Paula microwaved frozen chili for dinner. No mess to clean. We ate in our chairs around the fire. We were wild and crazy staying up until 10:30 Saturday night. We enjoyed another good nights sleep.
Carter needed to be registerd and on the field by 10:30 so we were packed up and ready to roll by nine. The rest is history. We had a busy drive home in what we thought was a whole lot of traffic. When we got to Ottawa it was sunny and hot. Weird I tell you, weird. We unloaded the RV, drove it to storage and returned home for some rest and relaxation.
Have a great week and especially a wonderful Canada Day / 80th Birthday celebration next weekend. We are very sad we can not attend. It is our home association tournament of which we have to volunteer as well as Carter must attend.
